We regularly update this report to track the performance of the labour market.

Irish job postings on Indeed remain elevated. As of 10 November, job postings — a real-time measure of labour market activity — were 26% above the 1 February, 2020, pre-pandemic baseline, seasonally adjusted. That’s little changed from the position three months ago, albeit well down from the peak of 65% above the baseline seen back in February 2022. And though the Irish economy faces headwinds, hiring demand continues to show resilience.

Some categories have boomed while others lag

We continue to see considerable variation in the strength of job postings across occupational categories. Healthcare and social care-related occupations are among those where postings are farthest above pre-pandemic levels, while tech and professional categories are among those with the weakest job posting trends.

Table titled “Some categories have boomed while others lag.” Indeed compared the trend in Irish job postings, between 1 February, 2020, and 10 November 2023 across selected occupational categories. The strongest performers were pharmacy and therapy, while the weakest performers were media & communications and software development.

Dublin job postings trend remains weaker than the rest of Ireland

Dublin continues to underperform the rest of Ireland, with job postings in the capital having dipped marginally below their pre-pandemic level (-2%). That partly reflects Dublin’s greater exposure to slowdowns in the tech and professional services categories. Across the rest of Ireland, job postings stand 66% above their pre-pandemic level.

A line graph titled “Dublin’s job postings lag” shows a breakdown of the percentage change in job postings on Indeed Ireland since 1 February 2020, seasonally adjusted, to 10 November 2023, for Dublin versus the rest of Ireland. At 2% below the pre-pandemic baseline, Dublin continues to underperform the rest of Ireland (+66%).

We will continue to provide regular updates on these trends as the situation evolves. We also host the data behind the postings trends plots on Github as downloadable CSV files. Typically, the site will be updated with the latest data one day after the respective Hiring Lab tracker is published.

Methodology

All figures in this blog post are the percentage change in seasonally-adjusted job postings since 1 February, 2020, using a seven-day trailing average. 1 February, 2020, is our pre-pandemic baseline. We seasonally adjust each series based on historical patterns in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Each series, including the national trend, occupational sectors, and sub-national geographies, is seasonally adjusted separately. We adopted this new methodology in January 2021.
