The Indeed Hiring Lab tracks employment trends in the Transportation vertical, analyzing the latest Indeed and Bureau of Labor Statistics data. We look at overall labor market trends, and dive deeper into job postings trends in various Transportation occupational categories. Finally, we dive into recent trends relating to employers’ advertisement of signing bonuses.

Takeaways

  • All job postings on the Indeed site are down 7.7% over the past year
  • Job postings in transportation have declined this year
  • Transportation wage growth has fallen off recent highs

Indeed job postings

As we near the end of the fourth quarter of 2022 Indeed job postings have continued to reflect the cooling labor market. As of December 9, job postings are down 7.7% from the same time last year. However, demand for workers remains quite strong. As of December 9, the Indeed job postings index registered at 148, meaning job postings remain 48% above their pre-pandemic base line.

Transportation job postings

The job postings trends inside the transportation segment largely reflect the cooling of the overall labor market, most likely due to the economy’s shift from goods spending to services coming out of the pandemic. Loading & Stocking and Logistic Support have registered substantial drops in job postings over the past year, down 17.1% and 19.2%, respectively. Driving positions are mostly flat from last year, down just 6.3%.

Transportation wage growth

As the labor market has cooled this year employers have faced a bit less competition for workers, which is reflected in wages. Recent data from the Indeed Wage Tracker show that wages across the labor market are growing at 6.5% year-over-year, down from their March 2022 high of 9%. The chart below shows year-over-year wage growth for Driving and Loading & Stocking roles. After peaking in early 2022, wage growth for both categories has dropped substantially, although still remains above pre-pandemic level as transportation workers stay in demand.
