{"id":13974,"date":"2025-10-14T19:34:01","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T18:34:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/?p=13974"},"modified":"2025-10-14T19:34:59","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T18:34:59","slug":"uk-employment-figures-october-2025-signs-of-stabilisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/blog\/2025\/10\/14\/uk-employment-figures-october-2025-signs-of-stabilisation\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Employment Figures, October 2025: Signs of Stabilisation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Key points:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Employment appears to have been relatively flat in recent months, amid subdued hiring appetite and limited job losses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wage growth continues to gradually cool but remains robust.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK labour market has stabilised in recent months after weakening earlier in the year, settling into a pattern in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/blog\/2025\/09\/26\/september-uk-labour-market-cooling-job-market-fails-to-dent-pay-gains\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hiring appetite remains weak<\/a> but job losses are limited.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest Office for National Statistics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/employmentandlabourmarket\/peopleinwork\/employmentandemployeetypes\/bulletins\/uklabourmarket\/october2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">figures<\/a> showed a fall of almost 10,000 in payrolled employment during September. However, payroll figures for the prior two months were revised to show increases instead of declines, suggesting a flatter trend than previously thought. Payrolled employment is down around 100,000 from a year ago, prior to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/uks-reeves-raises-employers-national-insurance-contributions-2024-10-30\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">October 2024 Budget<\/a> when the Chancellor announced a significant hike in employer National Insurance Contributions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vacancies fell by 9,000 to 717,000 in the three months to September, the second-smallest decline since mid-2022. The unemployment rate has gradually crept up to 4.8% in recent months, a four-year high but still relatively low by historical standards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With employer confidence still somewhat fragile, the labour market seems unlikely to shake off its stagnancy soon. However, improved visibility following this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/make-or-break-chancellor-warned-businesses-cant-take-more-tax-hikes-in-budget-13449801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">budget<\/a> in late November may give businesses a little more certainty ahead of their workforce planning for next year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While pay pressures continue to ease, regular wage growth is still running hot at 4.7% year-on-year and is expected to recede only gradually. With inflation pressures still a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cge2q7wvyz3o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">concern<\/a> for the Bank of England, any further interest rate cuts are unlikely until 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK labour market has steadied in recent months after a period of softening earlier in the
