{"id":13957,"date":"2025-09-24T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/?p=13957"},"modified":"2025-09-23T20:08:25","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T19:08:25","slug":"hybrid-work-tightens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/blog\/2025\/09\/24\/hybrid-work-tightens\/","title":{"rendered":"Hybrid Work Tightens: 2-3 Days a Week in the Office Has Become the Norm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hybrid work patterns are shifting as UK employers tighten office attendance requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Just 15% of hybrid job postings require only one office day per week in 2025, down from 34% two years ago.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The most common minimum is now two office days (56%, up from 43% in 2023).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A further 25% require at least three days, up from 20% in 2023.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accounting, human resources and software development have the highest average number of minimum in-office days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social science and architecture jobs require relatively few in-office days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/employmentandlabourmarket\/peopleinwork\/employmentandemployeetypes\/articles\/whohasaccesstohybridworkingreatbritain\/2025-06-11#:~:text=Employees%20(30%25)%20were%20more,%2Dtime%20jobs%20(18%25).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">More than a quarter<\/a> of UK adults had access to hybrid work during Q1, a lasting workplace legacy of the pandemic that has survived several high-profile <a href=\"https:\/\/startups.co.uk\/news\/companies-ordering-return-to-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">return-to-office<\/a> calls. The share of UK postings mentioning remote and\/or hybrid work has remained fairly stable at around 15% for several months, near all-time highs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, employers are tightening these hybrid arrangements, requiring more frequent office attendance than before. Just 15% of hybrid job postings asking for a specific number of days in office specified a minimum of one day per week in 2025 (through August), down from roughly one-third in 2023. The most common arrangement is two days (56%, up from 43% two years ago). One-quarter of postings now indicate a minimum of three days a week in the office, up from 20% in 2023. And only 4% of postings offering some form of remote or hybrid work ask for a minimum of four days a week in the office.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This analysis examined both the number of days required in the office and the number of days permitted from home.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/d341ezm4iqaae0.cloudfront.net\/hiringlaborg\/sites\/3\/2025\/09\/02170949\/image-12-1024x640.png\" alt=\"Bar chart showing the share of hybrid job postings by minimum weekly in-office days. Two days a week in office minimum is the most common arrangement (56%) in 2025.\u00a0<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accounting and human resources have the highest average number of in-office days\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On average in 2025, the occupation with the highest number of required office days is accounting (2.4), followed by human resources (2.3) and IT infrastructure, operations &amp; support (2.3). Perhaps surprisingly, in an industry known for being relatively remote-friendly, the typical hybrid software development job requires 2.3 days in office, up 0.6 percentage points over the past two years to go from fourth-lowest to fourth-highest in this list. That was the second-largest increase behind scientific research &amp; development (0.7ppts).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost half (48%) of UK software development jobs mention remote and\/or hybrid work, the highest of all occupations tracked by Hiring Lab. The increase in required office days could reflect employers wielding more leverage in a subdued market for tech talent, and\/or wanting to promote greater in-person collaboration.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Occupations with fewer in-office days (on average) include social science and architecture (both 1.6). Accounting has the highest number of in-office days in 2025 at 2.4, while social science has the lowest at 1.6.\u00a0<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does this compare with worker preferences?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hrnews.co.uk\/remote-resistance-despite-company-mandates-british-employees-seek-flexibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Surveys<\/a> of UK workers commonly suggest that <a href=\"https:\/\/owllabs.co.uk\/state-of-hybrid-work\/2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1-2 days<\/a> a week in the office is their most favoured arrangement. The current balance, therefore, appears slightly higher than what employees desire, though not drastically so.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c8f3093f-b273-4d4c-90e6-574c952d75e2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employer surveys<\/a> suggest companies would like to further boost office attendance, there have also been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/mar\/31\/half-of-uk-professionals-might-quit-if-ordered-back-to-the-office-full-time-poll-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warnings<\/a> that some employees would consider leaving if forced back to the office.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several years after the pandemic-driven shift to remote work, hybrid arrangements remain in flux, and there remains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cipd.org\/uk\/views-and-insights\/thought-leadership\/insight\/employers-return-to-office-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">substantial variation in employer policies<\/a>. Market conditions continue to have a bearing, while employers may feel that the current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/blog\/2025\/08\/22\/august-2025-uk-labour-market-update-persistent-wage-pressures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">softness<\/a> of the labour market has strengthened their hand, leading some to perhaps push for greater on-site attendance.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This analysis was based on job postings on Indeed in the UK between January 2022 and August 2025. Postings requiring a specific number of minimum office days (between 1 and 4 per week) were identified and included in the dataset.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Occupations that are less office-based, defined as having less than 25% of postings mentioning remote\/hybrid flexibility according to Indeed Hiring Lab\u2019s <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/data.indeed.com\/#\/remote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>tracker<\/em><\/a><em> as of 31 July 2025, were excluded from the analysis.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Postings were identified using a text matching approach in job descriptions, based on commonly used wordings to indicate minimum office attendance expectations. This was based on either explicit references to in-office days per week, references to permitted work-from-home days, percentage-based statements or inferred from monthly office attendance requirements. References to initial training periods where there was a different number of in-office days were identified and ignored, with only the eventual expected schedule
