The headline Indeed job postings tracker signalled a soft start to 2022, partly reflecting the pattern of public holidays meaning a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/blog\/2022\/01\/13\/uk-job-postings-through-7-january\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">later-than-usual start<\/a> to new year hiring. Job postings were 39% above the 1 February 2020, pre-pandemic baseline, seasonally adjusted, as of 21 January 2022. That\u2019s up from 34% two weeks previously, but remaining below the peak of 48% at the end of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/EViQBYqqzymyrlGQYVfkf-zWNoF9pg5yR1Yy7Sc4SQ9NGErQmsx7UBLGgDu2w0UcRu0Mi7lReHChv4ubPeyQx5p2fJj0MmQX35Pvt5krwgtUB6EH9ZZT5dY0j3IIsivs3rx7GESN\" alt=\"A line graph titled \u201cJob postings on Indeed UK\u201d\" \/><figcaption><em>A line graph titled \u201cJob postings on Indeed UK\u201d showing the percentage change in job postings on Indeed UK since 01 Feb 2020, to 21 Jan 2022. There was a 39% change in UK job postings on a seasonally adjusted basis over the period.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Loading &amp; stocking, manufacturing and construction growth&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several of the categories that saw the biggest job postings growth last year posted gains in the latest fortnight, including loading &amp; stocking, production &amp; manufacturing and construction. Dental, chemical engineering and installation &amp; maintenance also saw improvements. Medical information and veterinary saw the biggest deteriorations over the period.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/JUuHNEa-u7IcOmZQokZhzPIerBmZMmO1XQn-vXg6lHto_7J0KSks_nZgm4pTvDOOFAV4VIx2X7c1vGq09HRuw1jAEmSU2c0Z9NrB7uLo_fjvpMhxJ37vmHdkQyy48Wr0tqsxJ8Qf\" alt=\"Table titled \u201cWarehousing, manufacturing and construction growth.\u201d \" \/><figcaption><em>Table titled \u201cWarehousing, manufacturing and construction growth.\u201d Indeed compared the percent change in UK job postings, between 01 February, 2020, and 21 Jan 2022 across various sectors divided into sections \u201cbiggest improvements,\u201d and \u201cbiggest deteriorations\u201d based on changes over the past fortnight. <\/em>The strongest performers were dental and loading &amp; stocking, while the weakest performers were medical information and veterinary. &nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hospitality stabilises<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hospitality hiring had slowed sharply over the holiday period amid the rise of omicron. There was a 45% change in food preparation &amp; service job postings on Indeed from 01 Feb 2020 to 21 Jan 2022, with modest growth in the past fortnight following a dip at year-end.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Uneven regional recovery&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The North East continues to have the strongest regional recovery, with job postings 74% above the pre-pandemic baseline. London remains at the foot of the regional rankings, with job postings up 24%. But the capital\u2019s labour market could be set for a boost by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/london\/office-return-london-commuters-passenger-numbers-tube-steve-barclay-b978398.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">return of office workers<\/a> following the end of home working guidance and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/covid-19-tests-for-fully-vaccinated-travellers-arriving-in-england-to-be-scrapped-from-11-february-12524261\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">easing international travel restrictions<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/mE9MbXlRdSb_dnEimsDrcHxBavPMMG9cxe2r8a9YOMSQbXkxs-sbPsJ3o7zF2VAbsQZ7uIaGvoBvoHDo7UGlLMI61S8HAAREP_in1KimCR_71QBZKpyqlOVWgnXBg3oX83htkoUL\" alt=\"Bar graph titled \u201cJob postings on Indeed UK.\u201d \" \/><figcaption><em>Bar graph titled \u201cJob postings on Indeed UK.\u201d <\/em>This bar graph shows the percentage change in job postings on Indeed UK since 01 Feb 2020, seasonally adjusted, to 21 Jan 2022.<em> The North East saw a 74% change, the largest, while London saw the lowest % change at 24%.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wide variation in city performance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The strength of job posting recoveries continues to vary considerably at the level of cities and large towns. Sunderland, Wakefield and Plymouth are furthest above the pre-pandemic baseline. At the other end of the scale, Aberdeen job postings show zero growth over the period.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/blog\/2021\/04\/22\/uk-job-posting-recovery-by-area\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a previous post<\/a>, posting recovery has generally been stronger in cities with higher shares of manufacturing, distribution, healthcare and education jobs, while areas reliant on hospitality, tourism and highly paid, white-collar, work-from-home jobs trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/vl9HSbPEtlRye9GQkNihep3Vh6aB-t3qVyblBhHpBKHRSTxdJjhEOQeG6-TmNenVRWiQg-TMGM7c8VkOxzww2ah8JPCxK6d0mNyYs8OHItBHiRWnDk9PvGHwjKGbjCzV38Y-RGCg\" alt=\"Table titled \u201cSunderland leads cities recovery.\u201d\" \/><figcaption><em>Table titled \u201cSunderland leads cities recovery.\u201d <\/em>This table shows the percentage change in job postings on Indeed UK since 01 Feb 2020, seasonally adjusted, to 21 Jan 2022.<em> Sunderland saw a 86% change, the largest, while Aberdeen saw the lowest % change at 0%.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We host the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/hiring-lab\/data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">underlying job-postings chart data on Github<\/a> as downloadable CSV files. Typically, it will be updated with the latest data one day after this blog post was published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>All figures in this blog post are the percentage change in seasonally-adjusted job postings since 1 February, 2020, using a seven-day trailing average. 1 February, 2020, is our pre-pandemic baseline. We seasonally adjust each series based on historical patterns in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Each series, including the national trend, occupational sectors, and sub-national geographies, is seasonally adjusted separately. We adopted this new methodology in January 2021.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><em>The number of job postings on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/indeed.com\/\">Indeed.com<\/a>, whether related to paid or unpaid job solicitations, is not indicative of potential revenue or earnings of Indeed, which comprises a significant percentage of the HR Technology segment of its parent company, Recruit Holdings Co., Ltd. Job posting numbers are provided for information purposes only and should not be viewed as an indicator of performance of Indeed or Recruit.
