Job postings \u2014 a real-time measure of labour market activity \u2014 were 38.8% above the 1 February 2020, pre-pandemic baseline, seasonally adjusted, as of 5 November 2021. Strong demand for staff shows no sign of easing, suggesting that tight labour market conditions will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/blog\/2021\/11\/05\/job-search-survey-october-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">persist in the wake of furlough\u2019s closure<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/lMd5FebqfgH3Tz3xp7lnz7SKUWiV2I50hJiTH1LhRh8ruTZ0ZPE44fY-6kqC5z6zFs4lSaSCNaYAcXhMSd-cSPm4WR3cPBLgw5YgiBE0Uj6NqGVlCQ7tYdKxQo7fwbf6gDl8mYGI\" alt=\"A line graph titled \u201cJob postings on Indeed UK\u201d\" \/><figcaption><em>A line graph titled \u201cJob postings on Indeed UK\u201d showing the percentage change in job postings on Indeed UK since 01 Feb 2020, seasonally adjusted, to 22 Oct 2021. There was a 38.8% change in UK job postings on Indeed from 01 Feb 2020 to 05 Nov 2021.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A comparison of job posting trends across high, mid and low-paid categories (based on median advertised wages) shows the extent to which growth has been driven by the recovery of lower-paid sectors this year. Job postings for the low-paid tercile are now 66% above the pre-pandemic baseline, compared with 39% for mid-paid and 28% for high-paid.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/5NixOXimsRB186ZKaMhjS9khdIq-1If4WQm7cxgO_2XidkYiP8n4SsXNGZLrNIAhmc0zGIib_UqNdrwk2I815rVnGeg80TNyfVqKdy6I9GqYk-nKmokS35RcqVsTWbYIHbpOVB6A\" alt=\"A line graph titled \u201cLow-paid jobs have rebounded most\u201d \" \/><figcaption><em>A line graph titled \u201cLow-paid jobs have rebounded most\u201d showing the percentage change in job postings on Indeed UK, broken down by wage tercile, since 01 Feb 2020, seasonally adjusted, to 05 Nov 2021. There was a 66% change in low-paid jobs from 01 Feb 2020 to 05 Nov 2021, whereas high-paid jobs only rose 28%.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Construction growth&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction saw the strongest improvement in the latest fortnight, followed by chemical engineering. Loading &amp; stocking and retail saw further improvements, with postings in both categories standing at more than double pre-pandemic levels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sports, insurance, scientific research &amp; development and legal saw the biggest deterioration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/4g7plsaf9rcMN7uv8aygfQ54HOeyaVkGMgQFzz7TX3QJn3XLCKHAwDd0oML8ow_1XVzNzJVT04WANlbGhxx7iFvn_Dx42jtn_WcR64_RlPMhkCszvt22k2S9SjhmIyqSw-zHJC2s\" alt=\"Table titled \u201cConstruction growth.\u201d \" \/><figcaption><em>Table titled \u201cConstruction growth.\u201d Indeed compared the percent change in UK job postings, between 01 February, 2020, and 05 Nov 2021 across various sectors divided into sections \u201cstrongest performers,\u201d and \u201cweakest performers.\u201d <\/em>The strongest performers were construction and chemical engineering, while the weakest performers were sports and insurance.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North East continues to lead regionally&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The North East continues to show the strongest recovery among regions, with job postings 72% above the pre-pandemic level. London has slipped back to the bottom of the regional rankings at 25%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/E1Po2cwnsVh6fzFe2qHQeRkbeGKIU7jOFHY6roXBKGPE1Fc5h0Mc1LtFVPr8orosO_AWVKVC9o4TaFNVSvmzgB0DDQ6mXBL6RJOLT_XBMmokwqY6Rft__06ic6AlCdGqpCI7CVhT\" alt=\"Bar graph titled \u201cJob postings on Indeed UK.\u201d\" \/><figcaption><em>Bar graph titled \u201cJob postings on Indeed UK.\u201d <\/em>This bar graph shows the percentage change in job postings on Indeed UK since 01 Feb 2020, seasonally adjusted, to 05 Nov 2021.<em> The North East saw a 72% change, the largest, while London saw the lowest % change at 25%.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Northern cities and large towns continue to have strongest recoveries<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunderland has seen the strongest recovery among cities and large towns, followed by Barnsley and Middlesbrough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/blog\/2021\/04\/22\/uk-job-posting-recovery-by-area\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a previous post<\/a>, posting recovery has been fastest in cities with higher shares of manufacturing, distribution, healthcare and education jobs, while areas reliant on hospitality, tourism and highly paid, white-collar, work-from-home jobs trail.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All cities and large towns we track have now passed the pre-pandemic baseline, with Aberdeen and Crawley having climbed into positive territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/3JAR8-yKMsyfZ0KaiAokPY5YgM0z7RpBXTmstTGwf0rh4c4J92hHKCzPUI-oLKbcmxbXCbA6U7NzUX0sgcpeBYiW9CDFOCurXHvN7FHLfNgzdmWghNGmCHOsAsjBPrhNa9CnMGYO\" alt=\"Table titled \u201cSunderland leads cities recovery.\u201d\" \/><figcaption><em>Table titled \u201cSunderland leads cities recovery.\u201d <\/em>This table shows the percentage change in job postings on Indeed UK since 01 Feb 2020, seasonally adjusted, to 05 Nov 2021.<em> Sunderland saw a 94% change, the largest, while Crawley saw the lowest % change at 2%.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We host the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/hiring-lab\/data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">underlying job-postings chart data on Github<\/a> as downloadable CSV files. Typically, it will be updated with the latest data one day after this blog post was published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>All figures in this blog post are the percentage change in seasonally-adjusted job postings since 1 February, 2020, using a seven-day trailing average. 1 February, 2020, is our pre-pandemic baseline. We seasonally adjust each series based on historical patterns in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Each series, including the national trend, occupational sectors, and sub-national geographies, is seasonally adjusted separately. We adopted this new methodology in January 2021.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><em>The number of job postings on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/indeed.com\/\">Indeed.com<\/a>, whether related to paid or unpaid job solicitations, is not indicative of potential revenue or earnings of Indeed, which comprises a significant percentage of the HR Technology segment of its parent company, Recruit Holdings Co., Ltd. Job posting numbers are provided for information purposes only and should not be viewed as an indicator of performance of Indeed or Recruit.
