That followed a sustained run of strong growth over the past few months but still leaves postings well above their pre-pandemic level. Job postings \u2014 a real-time measure of labour market activity \u2014 were 26.1% above the 1 February 2020, pre-pandemic baseline, seasonally adjusted, as of 10 September 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Survey data indicate the UK economy has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/uk-economy-lost-more-momentum-august-pmi-survey-shows-2021-09-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lost some momentum<\/a> recently, with businesses in part linking this to staff shortages curtailing activity. We looked at how demand for labour has outpaced supply in a number of sectors in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/blog\/2021\/08\/26\/demand-for-workers-boosts-posted-wages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent post<\/a>, leading to rising wage pressures in those categories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/yM0wYRjPJqY7BQudvmgkKDe04KsdrhuJjq6o2Hn1NJPPVbdT9Ak3k3acX7hK-0W4e2FjgHW3xxGwVQqnMy1WU0p1kSS9rpxebJ_H78vK4ma4mtjjKbWHHLPD8j9Oc5hxWvar83m5=s0\" alt=\"A line graph titled \u201cJob postings on Indeed UK\u201d \" \/><figcaption><em>A line graph titled \u201cJob postings on Indeed UK\u201d showing the percentage change in job postings on Indeed UK since 01 Feb 2020, seasonally adjusted, to 10 Sep 2021. There was a 26.1% change in UK job postings on Indeed from 01 Feb 2020 to 10 Sep 2021.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Veterinary, education &amp; instruction and dental on the rise&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The veterinary category saw the biggest improvement in trend during the past fortnight. This was followed by education &amp; instruction and dental. Chemical engineering, real estate and therapy saw the sharpest deteriorations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/PAX8pmhVIWwOYrnwirSh4pnk01GYk7neqVaLXTG56bYxsKi4wQhWyoo_9uGLxTARFuzxcEYokcpB4_AfN9q7w2iXYmLX08fJCuo5AmJioso6OFjg3AbvQ3ylyH0nMt8P80vRqY8j=s0\" alt=\"  Table titled \u201cVeterinary growth.\u201d\" \/><figcaption><em>Table titled \u201cVeterinary growth.\u201d Indeed compared the percent change in UK job postings, between 01 February, 2020, and 10 Sep 2021 across various sectors divided into sections \u201cstrongest performers,\u201d and \u201cweakest performers.\u201d <\/em>The strongest performers were veterinary, education &amp; instruction and dental, while the weakest performers were chemical engineering, real estate and therapy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>London continues to see slowest regional recovery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regional picture remained little changed in the past fortnight. London remains the laggard, with job postings 10% above pre-pandemic levels. It will be interesting to see how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/london\/london-back-to-office-wfh-covid-pandemic-b953861.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">return of office workers<\/a> affects London \u2060\u2014 and other large commuter cities \u2060\u2014 where their prolonged absence has weighed on local services jobs for a prolonged period. The North East continues to lead the regional recovery, with job postings 55% above the pre-pandemic level.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/TgKLtWQy7nYCy1wAMdP5LJRJ6jjjJz5rN2n8OR984aFVH8R4JVfLbPs66ZMEhCUhPOxgNBcP7CSc0NUm2dWTQsK7MedRL8a8PtAFeO6wAZldx2mux3vAuSBZ-k7_g-cvXl4NsPan=s0\" alt=\"Bar graph titled \u201cJob postings on Indeed UK.\u201d\" \/><figcaption><em>Bar graph titled \u201cJob postings on Indeed UK.\u201d <\/em>This bar graph shows the percentage change in job postings on Indeed UK since 01 Feb 2020, seasonally adjusted, to 10 Sep 2021.<em> The North East saw a 55% change, the largest, while London saw the lowest % change at 10%.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Middlesbrough and Sunderland have strongest recoveries<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at job posting recoveries by cities and large towns, postings are furthest above pre-pandemic levels in Middlesbrough, followed by Sunderland, Stoke, Barnsley and Hull.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/blog\/2021\/04\/22\/uk-job-posting-recovery-by-area\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a previous post<\/a>, posting recovery has been fastest in cities with higher shares of manufacturing, distribution, healthcare and education jobs, while areas reliant on hospitality, tourism and highly paid, white-collar, work-from-home jobs trail.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aberdeen and Crawley are the only two cities and large towns we track where job postings have not yet recovered to pre-pandemic levels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/qyHnB4D7WoUdqRq4xJmMwzljqm1xgSAlR9RVIxza3YzCypWRB7L-tfa7Q5mdH8eIiu-bUQX02or2RRcQgnpTkDK7B74dEd8v06QIvYzR41XHj9vTN3xepPrkRmP7bUq148uX5LBg=s0\" alt=\"Table titled \u201cMiddlesbrough leads job postings recovery.\u201d\" \/><figcaption><em>Table titled \u201cMiddlesbrough leads job postings recovery.\u201d <\/em>This table shows the percentage change in job postings on Indeed UK since 01 Feb 2020, seasonally adjusted, to 10 September 2021.<em> Middlesbrough saw a 71% change, the largest, while Aberdeen saw the lowest % change at -21%.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We host the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/hiring-lab\/data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">underlying job-postings chart data on Github<\/a> as downloadable CSV files. Typically, it will be updated with the latest data one day after this blog post was published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Methodology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>All figures in this blog post are the percentage change in seasonally-adjusted job postings since 1 February, 2020, using a seven-day trailing average. 1 February, 2020, is our pre-pandemic baseline. We seasonally adjust each series based on historical patterns in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Each series, including the national trend, occupational sectors, and sub-national geographies, is seasonally adjusted separately. We adopted this new methodology in January 2021.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><em>The number of job postings on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/indeed.com\/\">Indeed.com<\/a>, whether related to paid or unpaid job solicitations, is not indicative of potential revenue or earnings of Indeed, which comprises a significant percentage of the HR Technology segment of its parent company, Recruit Holdings Co., Ltd. Job posting numbers are provided for information purposes only and should not be viewed as an indicator of performance of Indeed or Recruit.
