Christmas jobs posted on Indeed saw higher average interest levels compared with all types of jobs during September than had been the case in the same month in 2018 and 2019. With the exception of August, that mirrored the pattern seen over the summer. Jobseekers may be looking at Christmas jobs as a potential temporary lifeline as job losses mount at a time when <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/blog\/2020\/09\/22\/uk-job-postings-through-18th-sept\/\" target=\"_blank\">vacancies remain way down<\/a> on pre-crisis levels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/rhldWOkipTKirGECaUv55CTBO74rNYA4fKArwML1UOKmpi3XXVpcC8pfF7OWQak1hQtEJDm3YXQnjDgtqno6235kZMEo5T7B7diBeFzSxF2ief2qTWPkZ5XehGjIN41iHZ3Kp9Td\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>This bar graph shows the ratio of clicks per Christmas\/seasonal job posting versus all postings highlighting that seasonal jobs are seeing higher interest this year.  Beginning in March, 2020 seasonal jobs over took 2018 and 2019 in interest level and continued to steadily climb through September 2020 only falling below the other years in August of 2020.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Christmas hiring ramp-up underway<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Postings for Christmas jobs typically start to increase as the summer is drawing to a close. Starting in late August, jobs with words like \u2018Christmas\u2019, \u2018seasonal\u2019 or \u2018Santa\u2019 in the title capture a rising share of all job postings on Indeed. After this initial burst, postings then tend to soar in September and October before reaching a peak in November. This year\u2019s ramp-up appeared to be lagging previous years in September, but there has been a distinct upshift since the start of October and the trend is now broadly in line with 2018 and 2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/HLKvfyK302s8FyD-rPKjBwZB1IQzZsuFcsUOSjw59vfb846t4SQry6aR5Elq3Hd7XgkubiUcjp8Kigg-1jVc2VgRsiMk9p71Nb63az6cK0QIIaEOC51WWCLaEhRvs8eV8BuXJcM9\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>This line graph shows Christmas and seasonal jobs per million jobs on Indeed.co.uk.  The data shows that Christmas hiring for 2020 began to ramp up beginning in October 2020.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shift in composition towards retail and driving<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at the composition of seasonal hiring during the month of September this year, we see that retail and driving roles account for increased shares than in 2019, while the share of warehouse roles is broadly flat. The shares of food preparation &amp; service and hospitality &amp; tourism are down on previous years though, with the picture looking grim for these sectors this winter. Many establishments would normally have a packed Christmas party schedule booked in by this time of year, but are instead facing a bleak midwinter thanks to the virus. As a result, there are fewer seasonal opportunities for roles such as chefs, waiters and bar staff. The retail and distribution sectors on the other hand seem set to be busy as usual in the run up to Christmas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/LHC_FdJDVliJCdOP2jzN9KWQITADoivDXqDCjTqUjI6tSHm3E0tMtDv6_cVV03h8rWxaG4o_rNyxsAFFvkofTs3zDu6a8P3lQShWpIrIYLjK7vIDsuuGAgoVm4AlYBZnbQ1HS7xt\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>This bar graph shows the percentage of Christmas and seasonal jobs by selected category highlighting the shift towards retail and driving for 2020.  In 2020 Retail seasonal jobs were at 56% compared to 40% in Sept. 2019 and 60% in Sept 2018.  In 2020 Loading and Stocking seasonal jobs were at 11% compared to 10% in Sept. 2018 and 12% in Sept. 2019.  Driving jobs showed a larger increase for 2020 compared to the other years at 18% while 2018 only showed 5%.  Food Prep &amp; Service seasonal jobs were at 9% for 2020 compared to 12% in 2018 and 25% in 2019.
