{"id":11244,"date":"2019-06-18T08:00:19","date_gmt":"2019-06-18T07:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/?p=11244"},"modified":"2022-08-12T18:11:01","modified_gmt":"2022-08-12T17:11:01","slug":"finance-jobs-and-brexit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/uk\/blog\/2019\/06\/18\/finance-jobs-and-brexit\/","title":{"rendered":"London Is Losing Its Lustre as a Banking Hub as Brexit Looms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key\npoints:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Foreign jobseeker interest in London finance jobs has fallen during the Brexit process as measured by clicks on Indeed.<\/li><li>While clicks from EU-based jobseekers started to fall immediately after the Brexit referendum in 2016, the vacuum was initially filled by jobseekers from non-EU countries, including the US, Australia and India.<\/li><li>Despite Brexit uncertainty, London finance jobs still attract more interest from foreign jobseekers than the typical UK job.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many bankers and politicians fear that Brexit\nwill undermine London\u2019s position as a leading global financial centre by\nimpairing international banks\u2019 ability to serve European clients from their\nCity hubs. Banks are concerned that the lack of clarity about the nature and\ntiming of Brexit generates an uncertainty that can be particularly dangerous\nfor financial institutions. Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ey.com\/uk\/en\/newsroom\/news-releases\/19-01-07-ey-financial-services-brexit-tracker-heightened-uncertainty-drives-financial-services-companies-to-move-almost-800-billion-pounds-of-assets-to-europe\">surveys<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-47522347\">press reports<\/a> suggest that some\nbanks have already started pulling out by moving staff or assets from the UK to\nother countries, such as Ireland. Others are drawing up plans to relocate operations\nif the UK leaves the EU without a deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How are financial professionals reacting to this uncertainty? To measure how interest in London\u2019s finance jobs has changed since 2015, when the Government decided to press ahead with a referendum on EU membership, we looked at the trends in clicks on Indeed\u2019s UK site by jobseekers from abroad. We found that the interest of foreign jobseekers in London finance jobs has fallen. In the first four months of 2019, jobseekers outside the UK accounted for 12.9% of all clicks on London\u2019s finance jobs, lower than the 14.7% registered in the first four months of 2015. That represents a 12% decline in the contribution of jobseekers from abroad to London\u2019s potential supply of financial professionals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"974\" height=\"527\" src=\"https:\/\/d341ezm4iqaae0.cloudfront.net\/hiringlaborg\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/02171508\/ukfinance1.png\" alt=\"Foreign jobseekers are less interested in city jobs\" class=\"wp-image-11246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d341ezm4iqaae0.cloudfront.net\/hiringlaborg\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/02171508\/ukfinance1.png 974w, https:\/\/d341ezm4iqaae0.cloudfront.net\/hiringlaborg\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/02171508\/ukfinance1-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/d341ezm4iqaae0.cloudfront.net\/hiringlaborg\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/02171508\/ukfinance1-768x416.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 974px) 100vw, 974px\" \/><figcaption>This line graph shows clicks from outside the UK as a share of clicks on London finance jobs by percentage highlighting foreign jobseekers are less interested in city jobs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brexit\u2019s\nrole in the decline<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Two things suggest that Brexit played a decisive role in this decline. First, the percentage hovered around 15% before the referendum, but dropped immediately afterward. Second, jobseekers in EU countries other than the UK reacted much more quickly than those from outside the EU, probably because they had the most to lose from possible barriers to the free movement of people. Between the first quarter of 2015 and the first quarter of 2018, when the Brexit negotiations were well under way, EU jobseekers\u2019 share of all clicks on London finance jobs fell from 7.8% to 5.9%, a change of almost two percentage points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"974\" height=\"527\" src=\"https:\/\/d341ezm4iqaae0.cloudfront.net\/hiringlaborg\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/02171507\/ukfinance2.png\" alt=\"EU jobseekers reacted more quickly to Brexit news\" class=\"wp-image-11247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d341ezm4iqaae0.cloudfront.net\/hiringlaborg\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/02171507\/ukfinance2.png 974w, https:\/\/d341ezm4iqaae0.cloudfront.net\/hiringlaborg\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/02171507\/ukfinance2-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/d341ezm4iqaae0.cloudfront.net\/hiringlaborg\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/02171507\/ukfinance2-768x416.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 974px) 100vw, 974px\" \/><figcaption>This line graph shows the share of clicks on London finance jobs by percentages highlighting EU jobseekers reacted more quickly to Brexit news.  In March 2019 EU jobseekers surpassed Non-EU jobseekers percentage of clicks on London finance jobs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One piece of good news was that interest from\noutside the EU remained stable for some time, supported mainly by clicks from\nthe US, Australia and India &#8212; countries whose citizens had no freedom of\nmovement rights to lose. Another positive was that interest from EU jobseekers\nrecovered somewhat in 2018, perhaps because both the UK and the EU said they\nwere committed to allowing those who moved to the UK before the end of 2020 to\nremain. But the trend for non-EU workers has resumed its downward path in\nrecent months in what may be a reaction to political turmoil during the run-up\nto the original March 2019 Brexit deadline. The period has been marked by\ngreater <a href=\"https:\/\/think.ing.com\/articles\/four-charts-show-the-risk-of-a-no-deal-brexit-to-the-uk-economy\/\">talk<\/a> of a no-deal exit, raising\nuncertainty for the financial sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which\nforeign jobseekers are most interested in London finance jobs? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first quarter of 2019, the top country of origin for clicks on London finance job postings was France, followed by the US and Germany. Next was a mix of EU and non-EU countries, including several English-speaking ones. Overall, the top ten countries accounted for almost 8% of all clicks on London finance jobs.  Despite the downward trend, the interest of international talent in London\u2019s financial sector remains well above the typical 3% of clicks that UK job postings on Indeed receive from overseas. South Africa, 2.6% share of foreign clicks.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Methodology<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We\nexamined the clicks of people searching for jobs on Indeed in the United\nKingdom between 2014 and 2019. We defined a foreign click as one in which the\nuser\u2019s IP address was outside the UK. We use \u201cEU\u201d as shorthand for all\ncountries whose citizens benefit from the European Union\u2019s freedom of movement\nrules and therefore have the right to move to the UK for work.
