This size gain in labour productivity would have been near unthinkable for much of the past decade &#8211; and the uptick at the end of 2017 has brought productivity back up to a level not seen since before the economic downturn of 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d341ezm4iqaae0.cloudfront.net\/hiringlaborg\/sites\/3\/2018\/04\/02171602\/UK-Prod-Growth-2017Q4.png\" alt=\"Recent UK productivity growth is welcome\" class=\"wp-image-11466\" \/><figcaption>This line graph shows output per hour 2007Q4 = 100(ONS). From 2014 beginning at 98.5 productivity grew to 101 in 2018.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Impressive though this jump is, output per hour worked is still just 1.8% higher than it was on the eve of the recession and Britain\u2019s productivity puzzle remains far from solved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Britain\u2019s lost decade of weak productivity is more than an academic oddity &#8211; it\u2019s a constant brake on the economy and the underlying reason why Britons\u2019 paypackets are growing so slowly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At one point last year British productivity was growing at its slowest rate for nearly two centuries. So even with the growth clocked in the second half of 2017, it\u2019s still languishing in both historical and global terms.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d341ezm4iqaae0.cloudfront.net\/hiringlaborg\/sites\/3\/2018\/04\/02171602\/Lost-Decade.png\" alt=\"UK output per hour 2007Q4\" class=\"wp-image-11466\" \/><figcaption>This line graph shows UK output per hour 2007Q4 = 100 and trend (ONS) highlighting British productivity&#8217;s lost decade. From 2009 &#8211; 2017 productivity remained level below the 1994 to 2008 levels.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While the UK isn\u2019t the only country to have been hit by weak productivity in the last decade, the impact here has been harder and longer &#8211; and we remain at the bottom of the pile among major developed economies. In 2016, UK output per hour worked was 16.3% lower than that in the other G7 nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With the British economy now generating new jobs at a slower rate, the UK needs its existing workforce to work more productively &#8211; as it\u2019s this that creates a bigger economic pie for all of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">GDP growth is holding up better than expected, and as inflation falls the prospect of a return to real wage growth is inching closer.
