Coronavirus and Irish Job Postings Through August 21: Data from Indeed.ie

by

Job postings trend continues to gradually recover.

This post is updated as of 21st August 2020. We will continue to update these trends regularly as we track how coronavirus impacts the global labour market.

The job postings trend on Indeed Ireland continues to gradually improve. Though still down -40% on last year as of 21st August, that’s up from early June’s nadir of -57% and -42% at the end of last week. The Irish government continues to pursue a cautious reopening strategy, having announced a tightening of certain restrictions (mainly social rather than economic) last week following an uptick in new cases of COVID-19.

Rising demand for childcare

Childcare jobs saw a strongly improved trend in the latest month, likely reflecting more parents returning to workplaces or needing childcare while continuing to work from home. In fact, childcare is now faring slightly better than at the same time last year. The availability of childcare is likely to be a key factor in helping to get the economy moving again, with the Irish government looking at ways to prevent an increase in fees and help parents access the services they need to enable them to return to workplaces. Teaching, warehouse and driving jobs also saw strong improvements over the latest month.

Methodology

To measure the trends in total job postings, we calculated the 7-day moving average of the number of job postings on Indeed Ireland. We indexed each day’s 7-day moving average to the start of that year (1 February 2020 = 100 for 2020 data, and so on), or another date if specified on the chart.
