Indeed job postings offer a real-time measure of employer hiring appetite across the Canadian labour market. The interactive graphs below show how Canadian employer job postings on Indeed have evolved since the start of the pandemic, across countries, provinces, and Canadian occupational sectors.

These occupational sectors reflect different groups of job titles, and are more similar to Statistics Canada’s official occupation-level, rather than industry-level classifications. All of the data are seasonally adjusted 7-day moving averages, to better capture trends without being as impacted by day-to-day volatility and the typical ups and downs of the seasonal hiring cycle.

How to interpret this data?

  1. Canadian job postings plunged at the start of the pandemic, dropping to 46.8% below their February 1, 2020 level by May 6, 2020.
  2. There was a steady rebound in job postings during the second half of 2020, and by February 14, 2021 they were standing where they did before the pandemic.
  3. Canadian job postings rose throughout 2021, and by March 18, 2022, they were 68.8% above their February 1, 2020 level.

Indeed’s data can be downloaded from our Indeed Hiring Lab Github repository for independent analysis. Methodological Notes

All data used is the percentage change in seasonally-adjusted employer job postings since February 1, 2020, using a 7-day moving average. February 1, 2020 represents our pre-pandemic baseline. We seasonally-adjust each series based on historical patterns in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Each series, including the national trend and occupational sectors, is seasonally-adjusted separately. We adopted this methodology in January 2021.
